An Interesting Discussion

Let’s Talk about It

We had an interesting talk in health today.  The first thing is we had a short conversation about personal hygiene especially after phys ed.  Just a reminder that as one gets older, one of the first indications of getting older is the introduction of new odours, especially after physical activity.  This became apparent to me this week, as it always does at this time at this time of year in grade 6.  I made the suggestion to the class showering with soap and using deodorant was not against the law and that even having a small travel size of deodorant in their bag for after gym or recess isn’t a bad idea either. And avoid spraying AXE…we like to breath.
The second part of our conversation involved talking about mental health and mental illness as part of the Health Curriculum and our board initiative.  February 12th is Bell’s Let’s Talk Day 2013, so the students in room 119 talked about what we can do to keep healthy (exercise, eating salad, exercise and getting lots of sleep) both mentally and physically.  We also looked at some of the places tweens and teens could go if they felt that something was bothering them or a friend, that it was okay to get help.  The students had a lot of really good questions.  Here is a link to the Bell site here, if you get more questions at home.

In other things: In Math we are finishing up our Measurement unit and have spent the last 2 days clarifying our understanding about surface area and volume and will proceed to Metric conversions.  Our Unit test will be on Tuesday (yes, for sure this time) and there will be a performance task to be done in class.  After that, we will move onto fractions.
In literacy, we are working on persuasive writing.  So, if your children come to you with a well thought out argument about why you should get a dog….ummm…well, let me know so I can include that in their Term 2 report card.  We also started analyzing quotes, and will look at a new quote once a week.  This will then lead to our poem study which includes poem of the day.
The students are submitting their kidblogs on a weekly basis and are continuing to do a great job.
In social studies, we are continuing our unit on Europeans and Aboriginals with Current Events and a study of various explorers, this will continue until March Break. In Science, we are just finishing off our flight unit.  Next is Electricity.
Other Happenings:
Report Cards are going home on February 13th
Jump Rope for Heart will take place on February 14th
P. A Day February 15th
Family Day February 18th
